While many New Year's Resolutions include goals like running a marathon, dropping weight, or cutting back on fast foods, this year it’s time to push the focus outward. For something new this year, consider little daily acts that can make a positive change for other people or the environment.

Buy Local

Buying local is more important than you think; you’re literally keeping your community alive. Anything from the neighborhood lemonade stands to your local roofing companies need frequent patronage to keep their doors open and employees working. Supporting local businesses creates job opportunities and in some cases, directly supports local schools. Not to mention, you might actually get the better deal. Customer service is usually better and you’re more likely to receive customizable products.

Eco-Friendly Efforts

A surprisingly simple resolution, be just a little bit more eco-friendly this year. I know the suggestion of buying products isn’t really eco-friendly, but these one-time buys will heavily cut down on other waste and expenditures. To replace everyday plastic bags (sandwich, grocery, or otherwise), check out these reusable storage bags and super adorable grocery bags. Don’t forget to grab a metal water bottle while you’re at it, you’ll be amazed at the general increase in quality of life when you have guilt-free, cold water with you at all times. A super easy and eco-friendly purchase is the Nest thermostat. It can create a schedule and regulate the temperature of your home to an eco setting.  If that’s not your style, you could always make a greater effort to walk, bike, or take public transit whenever possible. Finally, make a conscious effort to limit plastic consumption. Start by taking a look at your bathroom – shampoos, conditioners, body wash, face wash… all in their own plastic vessels. Some companies are choosing to become more sustainable. Take BeastTM for example, this company markets metal bottles and easy refill packs that contain considerably less plastic than regular bathroom products.

Stay Informed… you responsible citizen, you.

Keep track of local elections, school boards, meetings with the Mayor, etc. but also the big ones – Presidential and Midterm elections too! It also helps to download a few news apps – not just from one side of the political spectrum, but both. Or you could check out one of many podcasts that do a good job of having hosts and guests with different political opinions. Read more, even if it’s technically an audiobook of some famous person’s autobiography. You’re definitely going to learn something you didn’t know before!

Not every resolution has to be grand or even physical, they can also be small and meaningful. Hopefully, these resolutions become daily habits and can lead to a more conscious life.
